Saint Malo, “the Corsair town” gained its name from the notorious Corsairs (French privateers or pirates).

The Corsair Town has been labelled a “France Station Nautique” (French nautical station) adding to its nautical image. The ramparts surrounding the town are a key part of its history ensuring freedom and security. At the beginning of the XVIII century the medieval ramparts (built in the XII century) proved to be insufficient. Vauban asked Garangeau, one of his engineers to built new defences that have remained in place up until this very day. A usual Sunday stroll for malouins, “the tour of the walls” is an absolute must for all visitors. During the walk you will see amazing marine landscapes of a rare beauty. Saint Malo port at the foot of the ramparts often welcomes important guests, usually with three masts and old style rigging. The malouins never tire of watching preparations for the rum route.

A jewel in St Malo’s heritage, Hotel Magon (sometimes known as Hotel Asfeld) is named after the ship-owner Magon de la Lande. The hotel was built in the middle of the XVIII century and is a beautiful example of this structured yet fashionable style of architecture. The terrace situated above the ramparts allows for a great view of the port. Finally don’t forget to explore the Vauban basin with its locks which keep the water level constant regardless of the changing tides. Through the years, Saint Malo has proudly been home to many great men including: Corsairs Duguay-Trouin and Surcouf, the explorer Jacques Cartier and the writer Chateaubriand. All of them have contributed to the town’s history and fame.
